Yoga in Streatham

Streatham

Streatham derives its name from having been situated near the great Roman road from Arundel to London; signifying in the Saxon language a ‘highway’, and ‘ham’, a dwelling. This would probably be a good clue to it now being the longest road in Europe.

Streatham was originally a hamlet for those travelling down to Brighton. It’s even noted down in the Doomsday-book, recording several manors or estates as lying within the parish of Streatham.

The 1900s saw Streatham as a great area to live. ‘In the 1930s it was called “West End of south London”. Streatham was glam.’ says a 2017 article in the Guardian, called Let’s move to Streatham. It then got a bad reputation in the 80s, where it had high crime, and was reported the worst high street in the UK in 2002.

Since then around £3m has been invested into Streatham to try and turn it’s reputation around. It’s very well linked, with 3 main railway stations – Streatham Common, Streatham, and Streatham Hill – which is around 160 years old – one of the first 3 stations there was.

Streatham has always been known for it’s health benefits – a mineral water of a cathartic quality was discovered in Streatham in 1660, which is still held in considerable esteem. The water from the well was sent in considerable quantities to some of the hospitals in London. This was up on the hill on the way to Crystal Palace, a place called Beulah Spa.
