West Norwood
West Norwood is one of those places not mentioned much, but has a surprising amount to offer. It has a beautiful cemetery, a great pizza place, a Picturehouse, a co-working space and pub with an enchanting garden.
The cemetery is 40 hectares and is beautiful and interesting to walk through. It was the world’s first gothic cemetery! It’s been awarded a Green Flag Award, recognising the hard work and joint effort of both community and council to restore this unique heritage and ecological asset for all to appreciate. West Norwood Cemetery is home to Victorian millionaires, gothic catacombs, and a rather strange railway…
The cemetery is built on a hill. There are several reasons for this. One is that it was believed that the raised ground would help prevent spread of disease. Additionally, the chapel, (which was demolished in the 1960s) was positioned so that the whole town could see it — a reminder of man’s mortality. And of course, by being on a hill, the dead were that little bit closer to heaven.
The hill formed the centre of a vast estate in Lambeth and Streatham that Lord Thurlow acquired during the 18th Century, The second Knight’s Hill is above the Tulse Hill railway tunnel, near West Dulwich railway station – which was originally called Lower Knights Hill station. West Norwood is a neighbour to Streatham.
